X-ray eyes

A young Russian girl who has X-ray vision and can 'see' inside people's bodies to diagnose illnesses appeared on UK television in January 2004 and correctly diagnosed the medical conditions of four strangers - a missing left kidney, damage to the spine, evidence of surgery on the spleen, and an old shoulder injury. The programme's resident doctor, initially sceptical, said he was very impressed.

17-year-old Natalia Demkina from Saransk, east of Moscow, can deliberately switch from normal to 'medical' vision, although she cannot see into her own body. Her X-ray vision was first noticed when, at the age of 10, she drew her mother's internal organs.

Taken to a psychiatrist, she drew his stomach with a previously diagnosed ulcer. Her fame has spread, and queues form outside her door. "I cannot turn them down," she says. "I do not accept any monetary rewards. I am often exhausted by the end of the day." The senior consultant at the main hospital in Saransk, Irina Kachan, had monitored Natalia's progress and says: "The percentage of cases where she is right is very high."

The teenager's ambition is to study medicine so that she can treat patients as
well as detecting their illnesses.
